August is upon us, so football is right around the corner!
With that, meet senior Chris Golson. The Streetsboro, OH native is a team captain this year for the Blue Streaks.
Why did you choose to attend John Carroll?
I met with Coach Long and some other coaches on staff, he pulled up my highlight tape and corrected me on some things and showed me what he liked out of me as well. Overall the coaching staff made me feel very welcomed as did the team when I met them. You really feel the family vibe when walking through campus too which was awesome.
What does being a Blue Streak mean to you?
Being a Man for Others and really understanding and empathizing with others. No matter who you are or where you come from you will leave JCU with the knowledge of being a Man of Carroll.
What are some of your favorite memories as a student at JCU?
To me, it’s all about the friendships made here at JCU, I have met many people through others since I came here with no one from my high school. Being able to find people with similar interests as you is awesome! I also really enjoy how the campus is active during the year.
What is the best part about being a student-athlete at JCU?
The best part for me is that being a student-athlete has helped me be more organized and efficient with my time. We don’t have much free time as student0athletes so when we are free being able to make fun memories with teammates as well as classmates makes all the difference.
What else have you been involved with on campus besides football?
I do a lot of volunteer work outside of being an athlete. I have helped the student at Roxboro Middle School with their schoolwork, I have been in the juvenile detention center also mentoring them and breaking bread with them and I also volunteered at Edwin’s restaurant which helps once inmates have a job and housing right out of jail!
Which JCU faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
On the football coaching staff, the head coach, Jeff Behrman. He really put life in perspective for me and helped me keep a level head while battling certain things. A faculty member who has been very helpful to me is Dr. Masterson, she is a psych professor and is very helpful with not only schoolwork but also if you just need to talk to anyone.
Reflecting back on your time at JCU, what advice would you give an incoming freshman?
Put your school work first and trust the process. Especially if you’re a student-athlete, some days seems terrible, but at the end of the day it’s just a day and it will come to an end, keep your head up and look for the positives. The memories and experiences you have here will live in with you forever and are definitely worth it.
What do you want to do for a living when you graduate from JCU?
Something I love and something that will help/benefit others. I am getting my Bachelor’s in Psychology and eventually my Masters. I would like to use that to either work as a psychologist in a jail or a therapist down the road.
