A consistent presence at John Carroll University, Dave Nichting ’60, ’68G is set to be honored by the Gridiron Club this year.
Nichting has been a devoted member of the John Carroll and John Carroll Football community for decades. A staple at JCU sporting events, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone more devoted to the Blue Streaks than the Nichting family, including his fantastic wife, Sharon.
Beyond being a wonderful human being, Nichting was also a heck of a football player in his heyday. A 6’4, 205-pound specimen hailing from Hamilton, Ohio, Nichting made a big-time impact for the Blue Streaks while lettering for three years. The Hamilton Catholic grad, who wore #33 as a junior and senior, was a star end/tackle for John Carroll.
Nichting was a major part of the undefeated 7-0 Blue Streaks in 1959. That team won the Presidents Athletic Conference with an unbeaten 6-0 mark in league play. The 1959 Blue Streaks were inducted into the John Carroll Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
Additionally during his sophomore season in 1957, JCU accrued a 6-1 mark.
In 1999, Nichting won the Alumni Medal from the John Carroll University Alumni Association. The Alumni Medal is the highest award given annually by the association, recognizing “an individual’s accomplishments in their profession, contributions to their community and dedicated service to John Carroll University post-graduation. This award also affirms the Jesuit ideal of being men and women for others, a principle reinforced in the mission of John Carroll University. ”
Nichting will be honored during JCU’s game vs. Wabash on October 4.
