The John Carroll University community lost a Man of Carroll over the weekend.

Chick Dolciato passed suddenly from this world to the next on Saturday, January 31 at the age of 91.

Dolciato made a large impact on many Blue Streaks during his time at John Carroll. His son, Dr. Ron Dolciato ’90, is a longtime coach at JCU as well, following in his father’s footsteps.

Chick coached at John Carroll from 1987-92. Dolciato was an original member of Tony DeCarlo’s coaching staff, joining the legendary coach for his first season at the helm and remaining aboard throughout the early part of the DeCarlo era, which originated much success.

Dolciato served as Quarterbacks Coach and the Junior Varsity Coach during his 5-year tenure. While JV records do not remain today from that time period, it is said that Dolciato only lost one JV game as the head coach during his tenure.

A critical member of the coaching staff, Dolciato played a key role in the legendary 1989 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship team. Dolciato and the Blue Streaks made the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The 1989 Blue Streaks were inducted into the John Carroll Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.

A friend to many, Dolciato is beloved to this day by his charges. Just this past summer, Dolciato happily reconnected with his former student-athletes and fellow coaches at the DeCarlo Memorial Golf Outing.

Dolciato’s son, Ron, just completed his 27th season coaching with the Blue Streaks. Dolciato, just like his father, works with the John Carroll signalcallers.

Chick also served as the head coach for a nearby elementary school, St. Paschal, from 1974-86. His teams won Cleveland CYO City Championships in 1974, 1982, 1983, and 1986.

Dolciato went on to own and operate Utilities Construction after graduating from John Adams High School in 1952. In addition to his love for football, Chick loved many other sports, especially golf.

Chick was the beloved husband of Mena (nee DeLuca) for 69 years. Chick was the father of Rocco, Rick (wife Anna), and Ron (wife Elana), a grandfather of seven, and great-grandfather of two.
